Course Description
Intended for new Foglight users, this class covers the fundamentals of managing a Foglight environment. During the course the student will learn about agents and all of the components that comprise an agent. They will also learn how to use the tools within Foglight to configure those agents as well as how to view, report, and alert on the data that is collected. Upon completion of this course, the student will have the tools necessary to configure a Foglight environment to their unique specifications.
Objectives
To gain a basic understanding of the Foglight product, how to use the Operations Console to manage Agents, Rules, Views, Reports, Service Level Policies and Security as well as how to use the Web Console to monitor events.
Course Content
This is the list of topics that are covered during the Foglight Admin Course:
- Overview: This is an introduction to the Foglight product, its uses, and how it fits into the Quest monitoring solution.
- The User Interfaces: This module gives a brief overview of the two Foglight user interfaces. The Operations Console and the Web Console.
- Maps: This module introduces the student to the IP Map and shows them how to create their own custom maps in Foglight.
- Foglight Agents: This module discusses the different parts that make up a Foglight Agent and explains Agent Startup Parameters and the Agent Browser.
- The Data Browser: This module covers the Data Browser and its uses.
- Foglight Views: This module introduces Views and all the different options associated with looking at an open View AND instructs how to create and edit a View.
- Custom Foglight Reports: This module discusses how to create and edit Reports as well as all the different options for saving and exporting Reports.
- The Foglight Registry: This module introduces the Foglight Registry and how its variables are used within Foglight to create Rules.
- Foglight Rules: This module explains how to create, edit and blackout Rules.
- Service Level Policies: This module introduces Service Level Policies and how they are created. It also shows how to view Service Level Policy Data and Reports.
- Foglight Security: This module details the makeup of Security in Foglight. It shows how to create new Users and Groups as well as how to assign different permissions to Foglight maps.
- Creating Custom Agents: This module covers the process used in creating a custom agent in Foglight. It shows how to construct Agent Schema and new Agent Startup Parameters.
- Command Line Utilities: This module covers the Foglight Command Line Utilities, what the syntax is for issuing those commands and how to get help from the command line.
- Session Wrap Up: Upon completion of the above topics, each student is asked to complete an online evaluation of the training.
